Sand disk selection guide

  • Step 1 Match the size of your sander tool (mm or inches), then check how the disc attached to the tool
    • Use PSA (Pressure Sensitive Adhesive) discs when working on large, flat surfaces where you do not need to change grits often and want a secure, firm attachment.
    • Use Hook & Loop discs for jobs that require frequent grit changes, easy disc swapping, sanding curves, or when reusing discs is beneficial.
  • Step 2 Type of disc backing
    • Paper backing: Cost-effective, good for light sanding jobs.
    • Cloth backing: For flat, curved or contoured surfaces, general-purpose sanding, finishing stages.
Tear-resistant, washable, resists grease and oil, durable.
    • Film backing: Very durable, ideal for sanding contoured shapes, automotive and marine applications. Waterproof, tear-resistant, consistent finish.
  • Step 3 Disc abrasive material
    • Aluminum Oxide: Most common abrasive, general purpose sanding on wood, metals, plastic.
    • Zirconia alumina: Tougher and longer-lasting than aluminum oxide. Best for stainless steel, cast iron, titanium, heavy stock removal.
    • Ceramic: Very hard, best for high-speed grinding and hard metals. Hard steels, stainless steel and super alloy.
    • Silicon Carbide: Best for non-ferrous metals, plastics, glass, ceramics, and finishing tasks.
  • Step 4 Choose sanding disc grit
Grit RangeDescription & UseTypical Applications
Coarse Grit (40–60)Aggressive material removal, rough sanding, shaping. Ideal for removing old paint, rust, or leveling rough wood and metal surfaces.Heavy stock removal, paint stripping, initial shaping.
Medium Grit (80–120)Smoothing surfaces after coarse sanding, preparing for finishing. Provides moderate material removal with a smoother finish.Surface preparation before primer or stain, smoothing wood or metal.
Fine Grit (150–220)Final sanding before painting or staining, removing minor scratches, creating a smooth surface.Pre-paint sanding, between coats sanding, finishing wood or metal.
Extra Fine Grit (240+)Polishing and ultra-fine finishing, smoothing imperfections for a polished look.Final sanding, wet sanding, polishing surfaces like wood, metal, or plastic.
